An ever-evolving digital sculpture evokes emotion to connect people with place. Situated in the lobby of 150 North Riverside, Chicago’s exclusive new commercial tower, a stunning video canvas of more than 3,000 square feet serves as a dynamic digital sculpture for tenants and visitors alike. Dubbed 150 Media Stream, the permanent installation features commissioned works by both established and budding artists from across the globe.

To avoid excessive repetition of contributed artworks, Leviathan has designed an intelligent content library that will continually transform over time and empower 150 Media Stream’s curators with maximum visual flexibility. Using generative algorithms to heighten originality and relevance, the system is programmed to address seasonal, monthly, weekly, daily and even real-time considerations. These tools, combined with a robustly-built scheduling system and rotating imagery from other commissioned artists, ensure views of the installation remain visually enticing throughout every moment of the day. Such an enhancement gratifies current tower inhabitants, attracts desirable new tenants, and even shares art with the public.

Unveiling the curtain 揭开帷幕

The art permanent art installations 127 ft. long canvas is comprised of 89 individual vertical LED displays of various heights and widths, as well as the integration of negative space between each video blade.

The video elements were designed as integrated components of a sculpture that addressed everything from the shapes of the video blades to the physical surroundings of the entire installation. The goal was to have enough content to fill an entire week without ever seeing the same piece twice.

Overall, the content strategy was to be both visually enticing and conceptually interesting throughout every moment of the day -grouping and sequencing pieces to create a coherent new story every day. 

Coordinated with both active and passive timings, the content plays off of activity and dynamism in the lobby on a typical workday. Careful consideration was put into how the living sculpture will affect tenants' and visitors' moods from morning to night, day to day, week to week, month to month, and throughout years to come.

A look under the hood 外观

Leviathan devised an ingenious solution using Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4. From end-to-end, our software toolkit involved using Derivative's TouchDesigner, GLSL shading language, Adobe's After Effects and Photoshop, Side Effects Software's Houdini, Autodesk Maya, and Maxon's Cinema 4D. To allow our clients to walk through the lobby space, visualize the scale of the installation and preview our media design from any point of view before we began coding. Details included having the marble and glass rendered in real-time with reflections, lighting, and depth of field.
