We do not See Until We See
"The flow would not be perceived clearly until we seeing ourselves under its influence." This is an analog and digital interactive reflective installation, an abstraction of the state of how we perceive matters around us. A scene of a mirror in water is symmetrically constructed with a water tank with a mirror at the centre, and a screen against the tank displaying a digital version of the reflection within the flow. There is very subtle, even unnoticeable analog flow being generated from pumps under the water tank. Meanwhile on the screen, there are computer-generated abstract graphics being animated form the data of the analog water movement, which is captured by a webcam on top of the installation. If there is a viewer steps forward and looks straight into his/her self reflection in the mirror within the water tank, his/her reflected face would be captured and recognised by the webcam, which triggers to turn up the pumps, then he/she would see the water flow getting more and more noticeable, eventually distorting his/her reflected image in the mirror. At the same time, the viewer’s reflected image would appear on the screen symmetrically in real-time, which emerges a scene of oneself looking at oneself involuntarily. And the other audience surrounding the installation would also witness the flow from that viewer’s distorted reflection on the screen and/or the triggered waves in the glass tank. The flow would not be perceived clearly until we seeing ourselves under its influence - Not only the flow of water in the tank, but also the flow of politics, culture, ecosystems, climates and so on.
The Strength to Rebloom
"Flowers bloomed are losing strength in their lifetime. But if there are people become aware of it, and willing to hold the bud with care, they would give the flowers the strength to rebloom." In January, Benny was involved in a great campaign "IAmNumber17" founded by Takeda, to arise awareness of rare diseases. Partnered with Alan Thomas (Instagram @ataxia_and_me), she created a video installation inspired from his experience of living with a rare diseases called Ataxia. In this project, the process that the flowers bloom as beautiful as usual at the beginning, but grow with less and less vitality - is a representation of the experience with Ataxia that the patients will progressively lose their strength and coordination abilities which brings difficulties to their balance, speech and motion. However, it doesn’t mean the situation is hopeless. For the patients, their families, doctors, and the other general public, raising more awareness and care of this rare disease could improve the condition. And that’s the meaning embodied in the interaction in this installation - the audience do not just watch the flowers journey going down, by holding the bud with their hands, they could help the flowers to rebloom.

For Benny as a creator, the Face Filter is an approach to explore her self-expression, documentation, and look for some kind of resonance from the others. Face Filters are like portrait arts in the digital age - with the elaborated scenario and the model's performance, a portrait depicts subtle emotion from the artist or the model. And the fact that social media as a digital interactive medium, it infinitely brings new characters, different places, and time into the portrait. Therefore, one prototype could be developed into infinite possibilities. But of course, we could also just enjoy these filters as some narcissistic toys.
